Alcohol Depression: Contribution of Alcohol in Depression
Medical experts have always recommended to limit the intake of alcohol. This is due to several effects it has on an individual’s health.
Most people get addicted to alcohol without even knowing about it. They drink alcohol in order to relieve stress and forget about the problems, they face in life. Ironically, what is perceived as antidepressant by alcohol drinkers, is actually a ‘depressant’.
Many studies and researches have already proved that intake of alcohol contributes to the development of depression. There are many ways alcohol contributes to depression. Here is an explanation on certain factors that helps alcohol in contributing to depression.
a) Exaggeration of feelings
The effect of alcohol on the brain usually influences the main center that works towards coordinating the judgment senses, speech and perception.
It contributes to slurring of speech and many errors in the process of thinking. Alcohol tends to depress bodily functions and also stimulates inhibitions. One can easily expresses one’s feelings as a part of brain that controls one’s behavior tends to get relaxed or behavior. Hence, there is an out burst of emotions.
Usually, the mood of a person is exaggerated due to the use of alcohol. It has the ability to enhance sadness and anxieties. In case, a person who is drinking alcohol is under depression at the same time, he or she may give vent to the depression.
Taking drugs can also enhance the effect of alcohol and the other drug. Moderates drinkers can enjoy the quality of alcohol being a tranquilizer and reduce their stress. However, people who drink regularly can experience increase in stress as soon as the drinker stops drinking.
b) Intermediary
Alcohol has a tendency to stress blood sugar control. This results in hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels in the body. Alcohol is also known to disrupt sleep. Both the factors mentioned would ultimately enhance the risk and makes the depression level severe.
c) Coping mechanism
People with depression or anxiety drink more amount of alcohol in an attempt to relieve stress. However, the more the person drinks the depression level increases.
d) Enhanced vulnerability
There are evidences to prove that overall tendency decreases serotonin activity related to early stages of alcoholism, especially among men
e) Effect on cortisol
Alcohol is known to slow down and relax the central nervous system that controls pulse rate, brain function and breathing. When a person consumes more alcohol, the functioning of the cells of the body and organs get relax. This ultimately leads to drowsiness and sedation in heavy drinkers.
Alcohol also tends to increase the amount of cortisol that circulates in the body. This works towards reducing the levels of serotonin levels in conjunction with certain important neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine. Both these are known to work as anti-depressants. When the level of serotonin drops in the body, depression can develop within quickly.
Alcohol should not be taken in order to exterminate depression in one’s life. Alcohol intake is certainly not an anti-depressant. You need to trust other things when it comes to knocking depression out from your life.
Treat Depression Before It Becomes Chronic
Depression is a serious condition affecting many people at any given time. There is some difference between an individual saying that he or she is feeling depressed and someone who is experiencing the clinical form of depression. Occasionally feeling depressed is part of being human. It is normal and natural for people to occasionally feel sad or moody for a day or two. When that feeling becomes extended, however, then the individual may be experiencing depression.
What Causes Depression? Depression can be caused by emotional factors. At times, the world becomes overwhelming and frightening. People experiencing such emotions can become depressed. These overwhelming emotions can be caused by triggering events. At other times, however, there does not seem to be a triggering event for depression. At such times, the actual cause for depression might be genetics, hormonal causes, or chemical imbalances in the body. General anxiety disorder may be associated with the cause of depression as well.
What does Depression Look Like? The symptoms of depression can vary from case to case. People with depression can lack energy or interest in the world. In addition, people experiencing depression may find it difficult to concentrate, and may experience feelings of worthlessness. People experiencing depression may als be restless and find it difficult to sleep. The symptoms of depression must show a change in the manner that a person used to feel or behave. They symptoms of depression may vary based on the age and sex of the individual. Because depression is so variable, the only way to diagnose depression is by a professional.
What is Chronic Depression? Chronic depression is a disease of varying severity. The person who is experiencing chronic depression may even be able to function rather normally; however, they often appear to be unhappy. The symptoms of chronic depression are persistent, but they are not of the same magnitude as those shown by someone experiencing major depression. Chronic depression is also called “dysthymia.”
What is Major Depression? Major depression is the most severe kind of depression that a person can experience. It is possible for a person to experience major depression at one time in his or her life without it becoming chronic or repetitive. In this case, the depression can be said to be “episodic,” and is probably related to a single event and will not be repeated. However, depression can also be “recurrent.” This kind of depression is seen repeatedly over a person’s lifetime, which is separated by periods in which the person is not depressed.
Chronic and major depression can be treated in the same manner as “regular” depression. Depression is responsive to “talk” therapy, as well as to medications. “Talk” therapy is that which most people are familiar, in which the client and the therapist square off with each other either in private or in groups. In addition, medication can be used to treat depression. Various kinds of drugs are available for treatment of depression. Medication is often used in combination with talk therapy. Many people consider this combination to be most effective, as medication can quiet the patient’s symptoms while talk therapy can be used to get to the root of the problem and address it.
Do Treatments for Depression Work?
Do treatments for depression work? If you ever suffered from depression as a patient or had to deal with depression as someone close to a patient having this mental illness, you most certainly will have had doubts like this in your mind or will have had arguments about this question. It seems that many depression sufferers, especially if they have been hit by this illness recently, have serious doubts about the effectiveness of the available treatments for depression. In many cases they can recall stories from patients who did not have success in treating depression via any of the treatments for depression they tried. There are two common misconceptions about treatments for depression and modern medicine in general that may lead to such a reaction:
1) If these treatments for depression did not help this patient they cannot help me either!
Not all treatments for depression are for everyone. In fact the more avanced our understanding of human genetics and biomedicine in general and of depression medication in particular gets the more it is obvious that each and every patient is different, though fortunately there are many common traits among large patient cohorts (Over time medical advancements will lead to a more personalized depression medication approach, but we are not quite there yet). Each of the treatments for depression has potential side effects and shows a large range of effectiveness over a given patient population. Both effects are on the one hand dependent on the depression medication dose applied, on the other hand they are a function of the patients’ different biochemical and genetic traits. That some patients experience side effects with depression medication, or do not get healed by particular treatments for depression does not allow the conclusion that the depression medication in question will not work perfectly well for other patients. Even if a patient experiences negative side effects of depression medication or her given treatments for depression do not seem to alleviate her condition even after some time, there is no need to despair. In our day and age the range of treatments for depression available is large and still increasing. The likelihood of getting the depression treatment one needs is very high indeed.
2) OK, I will take my pills for a couple of weeks and then it will be gone forever!
Today we expect that anything, including our mind and body, can be fixed fast. There seems to be just no time to really get to the roots of a problem. Just take a couple of pills, eat better and things will be fine in an instant. If they won’t, it must be because the treatment does not work. Well, treatments for depression do not quite work like that. The fight with depression is a long though often successful one. Depression medication usually takes a couple of weeks before its positive effect kicks in fully - So does the effect of other treatments for depression or depression treatment supports, be it electrotherapy, herbs, or a change in lifestyle. Even worse, at the beginning of depression treatment things may seem to be getting worse before they get better. This is a natural and well-known effect of many treatments for depression that has nonetheless led to many patients quitting treatment feeling that treatments for depression do not help them at all. Patient beware that you will have to wait to see the effects of your depression treatment and should in no case stop taking depression medication or stop pursuing other activities to treat depression because you cannot see a positive short term effect.
The likelihood for treatments of depression on the whole not working in a particular case is very slim indeed. However, for the reasons discussed above, certain treatments for depression may not work yet, not at all or only with many side effects for a given patient. If a patient is in the hands of a good medical professional he can rest assured that the right depression treatment for his particular case will be identified - A treatment for depression that will ease the pain and eventually will allow the depressed patient to gain back his life.
Anxiety And Depression: What Is The Connection?
Most people are not aware of the fact that anxiety and depression are connected to each other. Some experience both differently under varied circumstances. In order to learn the connection between them, let us learn about these conditions individually. A) AnxietyAnxiety can be referred to as a characteristic feature of most people across the globe. When in its normal form, the condition assists in being vigilant, gaining knowledge and general performance. In brief, anxiety is a useful condition if occurs naturally. However, when it exists in excess, the same condition starts working against the individual. The attention and performance levels are reduced due to feelings related to self-focus and apprehensions in extremes. These are actually aggravated by a specific blend of emotions including anger, guilt, shame, sadness and a dominating fear. This ultimately results in the conditions of unique ‘anxiety’ in an individual. Anxiety or feelings of stress may be referred to as symptoms or a response to pressure. The more these feelings become intolerable in a person, the worse the anxiety is going to react. Now, this does not indicate that person may only face one overwhelming problem. Usually the whole situation is a result of many problems reacting with each other. The most common anxiety disorder that affects about 5-6% of the total population across the globe is known to be the generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The condition is characterized by chronic worry related to almost all types of problems and circumstances in life. The whole situation is different from just the normal anxiety or worry as the disorder brings along with it, more frequency, higher intensity and total uncontrollability of thoughts related to worry. Yes, there may be a biological reason do this disorder. However, nothing has been confirmed yet. It has been proved that some people posses the tendency to overreact to stress that comes their way. One may also come under some sort of genetic influence.B) DepressionThere is absolutely no connection between weakness and depression. It has also been proved that anyone can suffer from the problem irrespective of the gender, caste, creed, color or genetic influence. The term ‘depression’ actually covers a wide variety of problems. It can be referred to as short spans of low mood or even a mind numbing inability of a person to function. In most of the cases, where the depression occurs due to the low mood of the individual, it is easy to sort out on one’s own self. One does not require any sort of medical intervention in these cases. However, unfortunately, there are cases where about 5 to 10% of the population that suffer from depression and can’t do without any formal support. It has also been proved that people suffering from anxiety disorder usually suffer from an anxiety disorder. C) The connectionIt is a known fact that most depressed individuals may develop feelings of helplessness and ultimately end up suffering from anxiety. In some cases, anxiety comes first and depression follows. To sum up, depression and anxieties are two separate conditions that may follow one another at certain circumstances.

Depression And Anxiety Medications - Drugs That Treat Them Both
Medications that are used in treating problems relating to anxiety do not always work for depression. It is quite unfortunate that though the two conditions go together they do not work for the same kind of medication. Luckily, doctors do have a separate list of medicines that are useful for both these symptoms at the same time. Zoloft and Paxil are two medications that work better for anxiety depression. The brand named drugs and the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors work pretty well for both.
SSRI’s list of depression anxiety medications has been proven clinically to help solve many a number of conditions. They block what is called the neurotransmitter serotonin in getting reabsorbed by certain type of cells present in the brain. This leaves serotonin in larger quantities in the brain. This neurotransmitter is linked with both depression and anxiety.
Drugs that are classified as SSRI’s
Lots of well known brands of depression anxiety medications are now available in the market. Lexapro, Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil are a few of the common names.
Forms of anxiety that can be treated by SSRI’s
The SSRI’s are quite capable of treating anxiety disorders. All antidepressants do not treat them as well as the SSRI’s do. Medications of anxiety depression like Celexa, Paxil and Luvox are been proved as useful in being able to treat the whole spectrum of disorders of anxiety inclusive of generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety and post traumatic disorder of stress.
Time taken to work
Anti depressants take quite some time to work unlike the anti anxiety medications which work in a few hours after they are taken. The anti depressants may take some days or even several weeks for the full effect of it to be felt. It is important for the patients to follow the instructions well if they are taking these depression anxiety medications. Dosage is the most important.
Side effects
These medicines may be very useful, but the do come out with a lot of side effects. They are however considered safer than many anti depressants. Over dose of these wil nto cause danger.
Some of the side effects include:
1. upset stomach
2. sexual desire is reduced
3. you may get headache
4. drowsiness, insomnia, restlessness and agitation
5. gaining weight
6. serotonin syndrome – very rare side effect. It can however be life threatening. It is caused due to high amounts of serotonin in the brain. SSRI’s and other medications are not prescribed together for this reason only. When supplements like St.John’s wort is taken with SSRI’s it may cause problems. Symptoms that you need to keep an eye on include hallucinations, seizures, increased heart rate, fever and change in blood pressure.
Depression anxiety medications in the class of SSRI’s have been useful. Although they have complications, relief is got on taking them.
